Fire Safety Guidance Document
Fire safety refers to precautions that are taken to:
prevent or reduce the likelihood of a fire that may result in death, injury, or property damage, alert those in a building to the presence of an uncontrolled fire in the event one occurs,
better enable those threatened by a fire to survive in and evacuate from affected areas, and reduce the damage caused by a fire.
Fire safety measures include those that are planned during the construction of a building orimplemented in structures that are already standing, and those that are taught to occupants of
the building.
Threats to fire safety are referred to as fire hazards . A fire hazard may include a situation thatincreases the likelihood a fire may start or may impede escape in the event a fire occurs.
Robust precautionary systems, awareness training and effective evacuation measures can help to provide a safe operating environment for workers and ensure protection of facility assets.
This guide seeks to provide further information on key fire safety requirements needed toprovide a safe working environment in facility and dormitories. This guide is a global document and not specific to
any one country (except for the Appendix that outlines additional safety requirements for Bangladesh). Please also note that in addition to the guidance listed here there may be additional legal
requirements that are country specific and must be adhered to.
